This past April, Keith Durrant (55 years of age) flew from BC to Japan to participate in the 2015 All Japan Judo High Dan Tournament held on April 28th.
Fighting in the 6th dan open weight division, Keith arm-locked his opponent in under 10 seconds winning one of the coveted “Outstanding Technique Award of the Day” presented to only 10 competitors in each dan division. There were 1320 competitors in attendance this year. This year also marks Keith’s 21st year participating in the tournament for which he was presented with his 20-year participant pin.
Another very special part of this year’s tournament was the participation of Matsumura Shigeya Sensei, who is currently 90 years of age!
Matsumura Sensei was the last fight of the day and chalked up his 53rd appearance as a competitor in the tournament. The result of Matsumura Sensei’s match was a tie with his considerably younger opponent of 86.
