The 2024 Judo BC Annual General Meeting and Board of Directors Elections were recently held online and 2 new Directors at Large were elected.
Judo BC would like to welcome Mariko Glover and Maaike Van Kooten to our Board of Directors. Here is a bit of information about them:
Mariko Glover
Mariko found judo later in life, starting in 2016 at the age of 40 when she was invited to try a judo class at a small martial arts and fitness studio. From there she was hooked and went on to train at Gathering Place Judo Club and Burnaby Judo Club before ultimately joining Peak Judo Club.
Mariko is an active competitor and has competed at the Canadian Open National Championships in the Veterans, Senior and Newaza divisions as well as the 2024 Veterans World Championships. Mariko earned the rank of Shodan in 2023 and is qualified as a NCCP Level 2 Dojo Instructor.
Outside of judo, Mariko works for the City of Vancouver as an Engineering Assistant for the Sewer Pump Station team.
Maaike Van Kooten
Maaike started judo with her Dad at the age of 6 at UBC Judo Club and has continued to practice judo wherever she goes. She competed in a few Junior and Senior Canadian National Championships and received her Nidan in 2016. Maaike has practiced judo as an adult in the Netherlands and the United States before coming back to B.C. and her home judo club – Victoria Judo Club where she helps teach and run the senior practices.
Professionally, Maaike is a researcher for the National Research Council Canada building instruments for large professional telescopes around the world.
Judo BC would like to thank past Directors at Large, Ramon Rodriguez and Rick Pollon for their time and contribution to judo in BC and the Judo BC Board of Directors.
