It is with great sadness that we announce Martin James Teiji Kuramoto’s sudden passing on January 1, 2025, at the age of 86. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather who left us peacefully too soon at his home with his loving wife of 60 years Elsie by his side. Martin had a lasting legacy within both his family and the community of Steveston in which he loved. Following a long career with BC Packers, he retired to fully pursue two of his greatest passions – judo and golf. He dedicated over 70 years of his life to judo and the Steveston Judo Club earning his rokudan (6th degree) black belt and his teaching and service to the sport culminated in his recent Steve Sasaki award from Judo BC last year. Martin loved riding his bike, fishing on the river, developing multiple solutions to mechanical problems, and most of all his five grandchildren.
Martin will be deeply missed by everyone in the judo community. As a judoka, sensei, referee, and mentor, his contributions, knowledge, time, and dedication to the sport have had a lasting impact on many. He will be fondly remembered.
