We are saddened to announce the passing of Udo Werner, a formidable judoka who made a lasting impression with Team BC in the 1970s.
Udo was born in Stuttgart, Germany, emigrating to Canada at 9 years old. He began his judo in BC at the Vancouver Judo Club with Sensei Tom Tamoto on Hastings St. in East Vancouver.
In the 1960s, Udo’s judo would take him to Japan, to train at the Kodokan under Isao Okano, the 1964 Olympic champion.
In the 1970s, Udo represented Canada in the 1972 and 1976 Olympics, as well as the 1973 World championships. His experience, skill, strength and leadership would earn him the role of captaining a young senior Team BC. Under his guidance, the team became a competitive and well trained unit capturing the Canadian Championship in 1979.
Udo was an outstanding judoka who inspired many as both a competitor and sensei. He will be remembered for his great fighting spirit and his contribution to Team BC.
